China successfully launches APSTAR-6D telecommunication satellite

  • China successfully sent a commercial telecommunication satellite, known as APSTAR-6D, into a planned orbit from the southwestern Xichang Satellite Launch Center.
  • The APSTAR-6D telecommunication satellite was launched by a Long March-3B carrier rocket. It was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
  • The geostationary satellite, APSTAR-6D is the first satellite of China’s global, high-throughput broadband satellite communication system that will form a space-wide Internet communication network covering the whole world, similar to GPS.

  • Former Netherlands and Ajax defender Wim Suurbier died at the age of 75.
  • Suurbier won three European championships with Ajax in the 1970s and he was also part of Dutch squad that played in two World Cup finals.

Hawkins Cookers Chairman, Brahm Vasudeva passed away at an age of 84. He was the Non-Executive Chairman and advisor to the company since 2006.

Vikram Doraiswami to be appointed as India’s new envoy to Bangladesh

  • GOI is set to appoint seasoned diplomat Vikram Doraiswami as India’s next envoy to Bangladesh.
  • He will succeed Riva Ganguly Das in Dhaka.
  • Doraiswami, a 1992 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as an additional secretary in-charge of international organizations and summits at the headquarters of the external affairs ministry in Delhi.

  • Persons named for Mohun Bagan Ratna Award 2020 by the football club Mohun Bagan’s executive committee are Hockey legend Gurbux Singh and former first-class cricketer Palash Nandy.
  • The award is presented every year by Mohun Bagan on the occasion of its foundation day on 29 July.

ISRO Chief K Sivan to be Conferred with 2020 Von Karman Award By IAA

  • ISRO Chief Dr Kailasavadivoo Sivan has been named as the winner of the 2020 Von Karman Award by the Paris-based International Academy of Astronautics (IAA).
  • The award will be conferred upon K Sivan in March 2021 in Paris.
  • Prior to K Sivan, only two Indians have been the recipients of this award. They were Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan and U.R. Rao.

‘Digital Choupal’ campaign started by NABARD on its 39th foundation day

  • National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has celebrated its 39th  Foundation day on 12th July
  • NABARD has organized its first “digital choupal”, a video conference which brought together farmers from across the country who have been associated with NABARD in different rural projects.
  • NABARD has also announced Rs 5,000 crore of refinance scheme for banks and financial institutions for providing finance to the beneficiaries of its 2,150 watershed development projects and also earmarked another Rs 5,000 crore for turning Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), into multi service centres.
