All India Tiger Census 2018 sets new Guinness World Record for largest camera-trap wildlife survey

  • The 4th edition of the All India Tiger Estimation 2018 has created the Guinness World Record for being the world’s largest camera trap wildlife survey.
  • The All India Tiger Estimation is conducted every four year since 2006, by the National Tiger Conservation Authority with technical support from the Wildlife Institute of India.
  • In the fourth cycle of the survey, conducted in 2018-19, Camera traps (outdoor photographic devices fitted with motion sensors that start recording when an animal passes by) were placed in 26,838 locations across 141 different sites.
  • A total of 34,858,623 photographs of wildlife were captured by the 26,838 camera traps installed.
  • Of the total photographs, 76,651 were tigers and 51,777 were leopards while the remaining were other native fauna.

India’s First State-Level ‘E-Lok Adalat’ conducted by Chhattisgarh High Court

  • The Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court P.R. Ramachandra Menon inaugurated the first State Level E-Lok Adalat of India from the Conference Hall of the Chhattisgarh State’s High Court in Bilaspur district.  The E-Lok Adalat was conducted through video conferencing.
  • The E-Lok Adalat was conducted in 195 benches across the state of Chhattisgarh. A total of 3133 cases were placed before the 195 benches out which 848 cases were attended by 24 benches from the capital city of Chhattisgarh Raipur.

Russia becomes first nation to complete clinical trials of Coronavirus vaccine

  • Russia has become the first nation to successfully complete the human trials of COVID vaccine. Russia’s COVID-19/coronavirus vaccine has proven to be effective, as per the results of the trials.
  • Chief Researcher Elena Smolyarchuk informed on July 12, 2020 that the human trials of Russia’s COVID vaccine have been completed and the volunteers will be discharged soon. Smolyarchuk is the head of Center for Clinical Research on Medications at Russia’s Sechenov University

NTPC’s Singrauli Unit 1 emerges as India’s top-performing plant in first quarter of FY21

  • The state-run electricity giant National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Singrauli’s Unit 1 has emerged as the top-performing unit in the country in the first quarter of the financial year 2020-21 as per the data released by Central Electricity Authority.
  • Singrauli Super Thermal Power Plant is located at Shaktinagar in Sonebhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. The power plant is the first power plant of NTPC.

T-Hub partners with MeitY and Digital India to lead program for hardware startups

  • T-Hub announced its partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Digital India.T-Hub will lead Digital India’s Scale Up program for hardware and IoT startups across India.
  • MeitY and Digital India aim to provide scale up opportunities to the startups and make them ready in terms of product, investment and new market access.

Qualcomm to invest Rs 730 crore in India’s Reliance Jio Platforms

  • US chipmaking giant Qualcomm’s venture arm has invested Rs 730 crore (approximately $97 million) in Jio Platforms for a 0.15 percent stake. This is the 13th foreign investment in Reliance’s $65 billion digital business in a span of 12 weeks.
  • The investment will deepen the ties between Qualcomm and Jio Platforms to support Jio Platforms on its journey to roll out advanced 5G infrastructure and services for Indian customers.

ADB Renews Pact with IEA to collaborate on Energy Sector

  • ADB has renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Energy Agency (IEA) to further scale up collaboration and advance progress on sustainability on energy sector resilience in the Asia and the Pacific region.
  • The three-year agreement, upto 2023, will enable the two organisations to share knowledge and best practice in energy sector data and analysis, on-the-ground engagement, capacity building, technology and innovation among other areas.

  • National Thermal Power Corporation  Ltd, a central PSU under Minister of Power and India’s largest power generation company, has won the prestigious CII-ITC Sustainability Award 2019, under the outstanding Accomplishment in Corporate Excellence Category.
  • NTPC has received Commendation for Significant Achievement in the category of CSR.

SEBI Revamps advisory committee on mutual funds

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has re-constituted its advisory committee on mutual funds that advises the capital markets regulator on matters related to regulation and development of the mutual fund industry.
  • The revamped advisory committee on mutual funds has 20-member and will be headed Usha Thorat, former deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Roles & Responsibilities of the committee:

  • Issues related to regulation and development of the mutual fund industry.
  • Disclosure requirements and measures required for a change in the legal framework to introduce simplification and transparency in mutual fund regulations

WHO sets up independent panel to review its handling of COVID-19 pandemic

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has set up an independent panel to review its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the response by governments.
  • The panel will be co-chaired by former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
  • The panel will provide an interim report to an annual meeting of health ministers in November and present a substantive report in May 2021.

India becomes second-largest source of FDI in United Kingdom

  • Based on the latest figures, released by the government of United Kingdom, India has moved up one place to become the second-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in UK in the financial year 2019-20. It was the third largest FDI source in 2018-29.
  • United States remained the top source of FDI for UK in 2019-20.
  • The top five largest source of FDI in UK included US, India, Germany, France and China and Hong Kong.

India Ranks Eighth For Cancer Preparedness index 2020 Among 10 Asia-Pacific Countries

  • India has been ranked eighth for cancer preparedness among 10 Asia-Pacific countries where Australia ranked 1st.
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report on “Cancer preparedness in Asia-Pacific: Progress towards universal cancer control”, sponsored by Roche, examines the findings from the EIU’s Index of Cancer Preparedness.
  • The report describes the complexities of the challenge of cancer facing 10 Asia-Pacific countries Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

FICCI Survey Estimates FY21 GDP Growth to be in Negative Territory

  • Industry body FICCI said its Economic Outlook Survey has projected the country’s annual median GDP growth for 2020-21 at (-) 4.5 per cent with a minimum and maximum growth estimate of (-) 6.4 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively for 2020-21.
  • With the rapid spread of COVID-19 pandemic manifesting into an economic and healthcare crisis globally, the latest forecast marks a sharp downward revision from the growth estimate of 5.5 per cent reported in the January 2020 survey.

Google Plans to Invest Rs. 75,000 crore in India in the next 5-7 years to boost Digital India

  • Technology giant Google will invest Rs. 75,000 crore (around $10 billion), in India over the next 5-7 years to boost India’s digital economy
  • This announcement was made by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai at the sixth edition of ‘Google for India’ virtual event on 13 July 2020.
  • The dedicated ‘Google for India Digitisation Fund’, will be deployed for this purpose.
  • The investments will be made through a mix of equity investments, partnerships, and operational, infrastructure and ecosystem investments.

The main focus of the Investments will be on four key areas:

  • Enabling affordable access and information to every Indian in their own language,
  • Building new products and services relevant to India’s unique needs
  • Empowering businesses as they continue to embark in digital transformation
  • Leveraging technology and Artificial Intelligence for social good in areas like healthcare, education and agriculture.
