Ossouka Raponda appointed as the first woman Prime Minister of Gabon

  • Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda has been appointed as the first woman prime minister of Gabon on 16 July 2020.
  • The 56-year-old is the 12th PM of the country and succeeds Julien Nkoghe Bekale.
  • Prior to holding this position, Ossouka Raponda served as defense minister since February 2019

ARCI, Vehant Technologies develop UV System for baggage Scan Disinfection

  • International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, and Vehant Technologies, Noida has jointly developed KritiScan UV Baggage Disinfection System.
  • The device has been designed to control the spread of infection through baggage.
  • Kritiscan UV advanced baggage disinfecting system has a specially designed motorized conveyor to guide the baggage into the disinfection tunnel, which uses UVC light (254 nm) with appropriate irradiance to inactivate microbes and viruses.

IIM Kozhikode develops wearable gadget for implementing social distancing norms

  • Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) based start-up has developed a unique user-friendly wearable band named ‘Veli Band’ that alarms proximity for helping implement social distancing norms.
  • This wearable device has been developed by Qual5 India Pvt. Ltd, a startup co-founded by a woman entrepreneur, mentored and funded by IIMK’s business incubator and entrepreneurship development center.
  • Veli Band helps implement social distancing and location/contact tracing which can help organizations comply with social distancing norms during the current pandemic situation. It will notify wearers that another band is within 3 feet (1 meter), reminding them of the need to maintain social distance.

Real Madrid defeated Villarreal and won 34th La Liga title

  • Real Madrid has been crowned La Liga Champions for the 34th time after defeating Villarreal 2–1, with one match remaining.
  • Also, the La Liga 2019-20 season title for the Spanish football club Real Madrid is first in three years. Last time the team won the title in 2017.
  • Under the leadership of coach Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid won all 10 games out 10 since the restart, and still, a game remaining.
  • Karim Benzema was the leading scorer for a 2-1 victory against Villarreal.

Automotive technology e-portal ‘ASPIRE’ launched by ICAT

  • The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) is developing a technology platform for the Indian Automotive Industry.
  • The objective behind this is to build a strong and self-reliant automotive industry in line with the vision of Make in India and Atma-Nirbhar vision of Government of India.
  • e-portal named ASPIRE (Automotive Solutions Portal for Industry, Research and Education) will be launched in different Phases.
  • Phase I of the portal has been launched on 15 July 2020 and includes connecting the users and experts on the portal for functionality assessment.
  • Phase II of the portal which is expected to be launched by August 15, 2020, will include the posting of domain-specific challenges, team formation, and finalizing the milestones for the execution of projects for the said challenges and industry problems.
  • The final phase of the portal is expected by 15 September 2020, with hosting of the Grand challenges and providing an elaborated resource database and project monitoring and execution.

Human clinical trial of COVAXIN to begin at AIIMS today

  • The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is starting its human clinical trial of the indigenously-developed COVID-19 vaccine COVAXIN from today.
  • AIIMS Ethics Committee has given its nod for the human clinical trial of COVAXIN.
  • AIIMS-Delhi is among the 12 sites selected by the Indian Council for Medical Research(ICMR) for conducting phase I and II human trials of COVAXIN.

  • The Mega Food Park is developed with an aim to develop the North-Eastern region and is in line to achieve Atmanirbhar Bharat.

To integrate AI Curriculum in 200 schools in India, CBSE ties up with IBM

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced that the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the high school curriculum for Grade XI and XII for the current academic year (2020 – 2021) has been developed in collaboration with IBM.
  • The curriculum is part of CBSE’s Social Empowerment through Work Education and Action (SEWA) program.
  • The initiative is aimed at helping students to learn AI skills for social good.
  • This curriculum will be launched in around 200 schools across Delhi-NCR, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab (13 states of India)

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the reappointment of Shyam Srinivasan as the MD & CEO of the Federal Bank.

SBI Cards appointed Ashwini Kumar Tewari as its new MD & CEO.

  • SBI Cards and Payment Services has appointed Ashwini Kumar Tewari as its new Managing Director and chief executive officer.
  • The new appointment will be valid for two years and his appointment will come into effect from August 1, 2020.
  • He was nominated by parent State Bank of India for this position.

SAP India appointed Kulmeet Bawa as new India MD

  • German software company SAP has appointed Kulmeet Bawa as president and managing director for its Indian operations from this month.
  • He replaces the incumbent Deb Deep Sengupta who will take up a new assignment within the organization.

  • Former Chelsea star and Borussia Dortmund forward Andre Schurrle has announced his retirement from football at the age of 29 after terminating his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
  • Andre Schürrle has ended his career in which he made 207 Bundesliga appearances, 68 in the English Premier League, and won the World Cup with Germany.

  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched its first mission to Mars on 20th July 2020. The UAE is striving to develop its scientific and technological capabilities and move away from its dependence on oil.
  • The Hope Probe was launched from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Center on 20 July for a seven-month journey to Mars. The satellite will orbit around Mars and send back data about the atmosphere.
  • The total cost of the Emirates Mars Mission is $200 million.
