IIT-Hyderabad collaborates with NVIDIA to establish India’s first AI research center

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) has collaborated with NVIDIA, a US-based multinational technology company, to establish India’s first ‘NVIDIA AI Technology Centre’(NVAITC) to accelerate research on Artificial Intelligence and its commercial adoption.
  • The centre will focus on advancing AI research in the areas of Agriculture and Smart Cities besides Language Understanding, increasing crop yield, support safer transportation systems and better ways of managing traffic, among others.

PM Modi inaugurated 750 MW Madhya Pradesh Solar Project

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the nation the 750 MW Solar Project set up at Rewa, Madhya Pradesh on 9th July 2020.
  • The Project comprises of three solar generating units of 250 MW each located on a 500-hectare plot of land situated inside a solar park (total area 1500 hectare).The Rewa Solar Project was the first solar project in the country to break the grid parity barrier. This project will reduce carbon emission equivalent to approx. 15 lakh ton of CO2 per year.
  • The entire cost of the Solar Power Project is worth around Rs 4000 crore.
  • 24 percent of the power generated by the Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Plant will be supplied to Delhi Metro while the remaining 76 percent of energy will be supplied to the state DISCOMs of Madhya Pradesh.

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to lift off Brazil’s Amazonia-1 satellite next month onboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  • The Amazonia-1 satellite which PSLV will launch will help in monitoring and observing the deforestation of the Amazon region.
  • The Brazilian satellite has been locally designed and tested in Brazil. It will be the first satellite for Earth observation.
  • The Amazonia-1 launch is among the 36 space and satellite missions ISRO has planned over the next two years

All India Tiger Census 2018 sets new Guinness World Record for largest camera-trap wildlife survey

  • The 4th edition of the All India Tiger Estimation 2018 has created the Guinness World Record for being the world’s largest camera trap wildlife survey.
  • The All India Tiger Estimation is conducted every four year since 2006, by the National Tiger Conservation Authority with technical support from the Wildlife Institute of India.
  • In the fourth cycle of the survey, conducted in 2018-19, Camera traps (outdoor photographic devices fitted with motion sensors that start recording when an animal passes by) were placed in 26,838 locations across 141 different sites.
  • A total of 34,858,623 photographs of wildlife were captured by the 26,838 camera traps installed.
  • Of the total photographs, 76,651 were tigers and 51,777 were leopards while the remaining were other native fauna.

India’s First State-Level ‘E-Lok Adalat’ conducted by Chhattisgarh High Court

  • The Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court P.R. Ramachandra Menon inaugurated the first State Level E-Lok Adalat of India from the Conference Hall of the Chhattisgarh State’s High Court in Bilaspur district.  The E-Lok Adalat was conducted through video conferencing.
  • The E-Lok Adalat was conducted in 195 benches across the state of Chhattisgarh. A total of 3133 cases were placed before the 195 benches out which 848 cases were attended by 24 benches from the capital city of Chhattisgarh Raipur.

Russia becomes first nation to complete clinical trials of Coronavirus vaccine

  • Russia has become the first nation to successfully complete the human trials of COVID vaccine. Russia’s COVID-19/coronavirus vaccine has proven to be effective, as per the results of the trials.
  • Chief Researcher Elena Smolyarchuk informed on July 12, 2020 that the human trials of Russia’s COVID vaccine have been completed and the volunteers will be discharged soon. Smolyarchuk is the head of Center for Clinical Research on Medications at Russia’s Sechenov University
