New Zealand postponed its General Election to October 17 due to COVID-19 pandemic

  • The Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern announced that the General election of the country is postponed by four weeks to October 17. This decision has been taken due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the country’s law, Elections are to be held before November 21.

Meghalaya appointed Satya Pal Malik as its new Governor

  • On 18th August, Goa Governor, Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya. He will be succeeding Tathagata Roy as Meghalaya’s Governor. Roy has completed his five-year tenure by serving as Governor of Tripura for three years and the remaining two years as Governor of Meghalaya.

Computer scientist Russell Kirsch passes away

  • Computer scientist Russell Kirsch who invented the “pixel” and scanned the world’s first digital photograph, passed away. Russell Kirsch also developed a technique to smooth out images with the help of pixels with variable shapes instead of the squares. He also developed the world’s first programmable computer, SEAC (Standards Eastern Automatic Computer). He worked as a research scientist at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards for five decades.
