ADB ink $132.8 million loan agreement for Meghalaya’s Power supply

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India have inked a USD 132.8 million loan agreement for Meghalaya Power Distribution Sector Improvement Project.
  • The project plans to strengthen and modernize the distribution network and advance the quality of power supplied to households, industries, and businesses in the northeastern state of Meghalaya.

  • The 5th India International Cherry Blossom Festival has been canceled due because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The festival is held annually in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, to commemorate the unique autumn flowering of the Himalayan cherry blossoms and mark the beginning of India’s version of autumn.

  • India’s largest “Piggery Mission” launched Meghalaya with an outlay of Rs 209 Crores to reduce the annual import of Pork worth Rs 150 Crore and make Meghalaya self-sufficient (“Aatma Nirbhar”) in pork production over the next 3 years.

Meghalaya appointed Satya Pal Malik as its new Governor

  • On 18th August, Goa Governor, Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya. He will be succeeding Tathagata Roy as Meghalaya’s Governor. Roy has completed his five-year tenure by serving as Governor of Tripura for three years and the remaining two years as Governor of Meghalaya.

Joint military exercise of India-Bangladesh at Umroi from Feb 3

A 14-day Indo-Bangladesh joint military training exercise, Sampriti-IX, will be conducted at Umroi, Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya from 3rd of February. Command Post Exercise (CPX) and a Field Training Exercise (FTX) will be conducted during joint military exercise.

48th Statehood day anniversary celebrated in Meghalaya

Meghalaya celebrated the 48th anniversary of statehood day on 21st January with cultural fanfares immersed in remnants of the ‘Hill State Movement’ that led up to the declaration of Meghalaya as a separate state in the year 1972. Traditional songs and dances marked the celebration at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong. The celebrations will continue till the Republic Day celebration.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stressed on the need to remember the glorious past, document it and pass it on to the younger generations. He said that slogans to die for the state should be replaced by slogans to live for the state and the nation by doing what needs to be done.
