Turkmenistan receives observer status in the World Trade Organization

  • Turkmenistan has been given observer status (25th country) by the World Trade Organization (WTO ) General Council. Turkmenistan has become the last former Soviet republic to make formal ties with the trade body.
  • The Central Asian country submitted a request for observer status in May and expressed willingness to trigger the talks on accession to the WTO within five years.

  • India has selected Brajendra Navnit, a 1999 IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre as its Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet recommended his appointment for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge.

WTO chief Roberto Azevedo resigns from post

  • The head of the World Trade Organization, Roberto Azevedo will resign from his post on August 31. He became the WTO chief in 2013.
  • The 62-year-old Brazilian career diplomat’s second four-year term was not scheduled to end until September 2021.
