  • The project is a part of the Indian Government’s initiative of National Solar Mission, to attain 100 GigaWatt (GW) of solar power by 2022.

India, Maldives inked a contract for development of Geydoshu Mas Plant in Maldives’ Maradhoo and Hulhudhoo

  • On July 22, 2020, India and Maldives signed an agreement to set up Geydoshu Mas Plant (Neighborhood Fish Processing Plants) at two islands in the Addu city of Maldives namely Maradhoo and Hulhudhoo. 
  • The contract inking ceremony was carried out in Addu City, which attended virtually Maldives’ Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, High Commissioner of India to the Maldives Sunjay Sudir, along with other members of Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign affairs.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited(NPCIL) declared that Unit-3 of Kakrapar Atomic Power Project(KAPP-3), India’s First 700 MWe (megawatt electric) and indigenously prepared Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor(PHWR) in Surat, Gujarat attained its first criticality – beginning of controlled and sustained nuclear fission reaction on 22nd July 2020(Wednesday).

  • The chairman of oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries exceeded ace American investor Warren Buffett to obtain the fifth spot on the real-time ranking by Forbes, which counted Mr. Ambani’s wealth at $75 billion (Rs 5.61 lakh crore at $1 = Rs 74.76).

Nicaragua to be 87th country to sign International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement

  • Nicaragua has come up as the 87th country to link the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Framework Agreement, an initiative headed by India to spread sustainable energy.
  • The agreement on behalf of the Central American country Nicaragua was inked by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Jaime Hermida Castillo at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York on 22, July 2020.

Turkmenistan receives observer status in the World Trade Organization

  • Turkmenistan has been given observer status (25th country) by the World Trade Organization (WTO ) General Council. Turkmenistan has become the last former Soviet republic to make formal ties with the trade body.
  • The Central Asian country submitted a request for observer status in May and expressed willingness to trigger the talks on accession to the WTO within five years.

India to have 60 percent renewable energy by 2030 said Power minister RK Singh

  • India will have approximately 60 percent of its installed electricity generation potential from clean sources by 2030, Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh said on 22nd July.
  • The minister also oozed confidence that the renewable energy capacity would touch 510 GW by 2030, including 60 GW of hydropower.
