Guwahati to host Third Khelo India youth games in Jan 2020

The third Khelo India youth games will be held in Guwahati between 10th and 22nd of January 2020. Cycling and lawn ball have been introduced as new disciplines in the games. It will be advocating for the elimination of single-use plastics this time. The emphasis will be given to the responsible use of plastic material and proper collection and disposal of plastic waste.

The opening ceremony of the third Khelo India Youth Games will take place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati on January 10 before the athletes take part in their respective events in full flow. Six thousand five hundred athletes from 37 teams will take part in the event.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal launched the torch relay of the competition in Guwahati, which will be carried to all district headquarters to elicit the cooperation of the people for the success of the Games.

APEDA-CFTRI signs MoU for Liason Office in Guwahati

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by CSIR-CFTRI with APEDA in Guwahati, Assam to give technical support to the food industries in the North East region.

The event will feature the participation of the North-Eastern states, Central Ministries, academia, civil society and international development organizations.

Assam Government to build 33 stadiums under Uttaran scheme

  • The Assam Government plans to build 33 stadiums across the state under the Uttaran Scheme, 300 crores will be given to construct these stadiums declared by Principal Secretary of Sports Avinash Joshi and Joint Director Kamaljit and 500 playgrounds are being built to encourage rural talents.
  • The Government has finalized to provide an amount of Rs.50,000 to 1000 players and Rs.75,000 will be given to 2500 clubs.

  • The National Green Tribunal(NGT) has exacted an interim fine of Rs 25 crore on PSU major Oil India over its failure to control fire in Assam’s Baghjan oil well resulting in harm to the atmosphere. Well, number 5 at Baghjan in Tinsukia district, has been spreading gas uncontrollably for the last 27 days and it caught fire on June 9, killing two of OIL’s firefighters at the site.

Poba Forest Reserve in Dhemaji to be upgraded to wildlife sanctuary

  • As per the announcement made by the state’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Poba Forest Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot located in Dhemaji of Upper Assam, will soon be upgraded to a wildlife sanctuary.
  • Poba Reserve Forest declared in 1924 with an area of 10,522 hectares is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

  • A mega scheme for women’s financial empowerment named “Orunodoi scheme” launched by Assam Govt.
  • The main objective of this scheme is to help the poor households to meet their medical, nutritional, and academic needs besides to meet the additional spending during various festivals and for that the state government has allocated a sum of Rs.280 crore.

Assam skill University to be set up at Mangaldoi in Darrang

  • The first ever Skill University in north eastern states of the country will come up soon  at Mangaldoi in Darrang. It will be set up by the Assam government .The total cost of setting up the University is estimated at Rs 900 crore with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

SVAYEM scheme relaunched by Assam govt

  • The ‘Swami Vivekananda Assam Youth Empowerment (SVAYEM)’ scheme relaunched by the Assam govt. with a total budget of Rs 1000 crore.
  • The objective behind relaunching the scheme is to provide self-employment to around 2 lakh youths of the state.

NSO’s Report on Literacy Rate

  • The National Statistical Office (NSO) released a report titled ‘Household Social Consumption: Education’. As per the report Kerala topped the list while Andhra Pradesh emerged as the least literate state, standing below Bihar.
  • Delhi stands at second position with 89% literacy rate. Uttarakhand is at number three with a literacy rate of 87.6% while Assam freezes at number four with 85.9% literacy rate.
